Second graders at Carroll ISD’s Old Union Elementary wanted to find a way to help endangered marine animals. After learning that many ocean animals are dying as a result of pollution and contamination, they decided to collect and recycle plastic shopping bags. The students partnered with a local church collecting plastic bags to crochet into sleeping mats for the homeless. During morning announcements, students shared a fact about water pollution or an endangered species and reminded their classmates to bring in their plastic bags. On May 24, the team presented more than 4,000 bags they collected to a representative from First United Methodist Church of Grapevine.
